Basics

What is an occupational health centre (OHC)?
An on-site medical facility at a workplace that gives first aid and emergency care, carries out pre-employment and periodic medical examinations, and keeps workers’ health records.
Is an OHC mandatory?
It depends on the number of workers, the processes and the state rules. Every factory needs first-aid boxes, factories with more than 500 workers need an ambulance room, and hazardous processes need regular medical examinations.
What is the difference between a first-aid room, an ambulance room and an OHC?
A first-aid room holds first-aid supplies for minor injuries; an ambulance room is required above 500 workers with prescribed equipment and medical and nursing staff; a full OHC adds examinations, screening, observation and health records.

Rules

How many first-aid boxes does a factory need?
Not less than one for every 150 workers ordinarily employed, each in the charge of a person holding a recognised first-aid certificate (Factories Act, s.45).
When is an ambulance room required?
In every factory where more than 500 workers are ordinarily employed, with the prescribed size, equipment and medical and nursing staff (Factories Act, s.45(4)).
Do hazardous-process factories need regular medical examinations?
Yes. Under s.41C, a worker must be examined before being assigned to work with a hazardous substance, and then at intervals not exceeding 12 months.
Does the OSH Code require annual health check-ups?
Section 6(1)(c) requires employers to provide a free annual health examination to employees of the age or class prescribed by the government.
Which rules apply in Karnataka?
The Karnataka Factories Rules, 1969 set the detailed requirements for factories in Karnataka, along with the central law. We map them for your site.

Design and equipment

How much space does an OHC need?
It depends on the level of care and the state rules for ambulance rooms and OHCs. We prepare a room schedule from your headcount and hazards.
Where should the OHC be located on site?
Close to the main work areas, on the ground floor, with direct ambulance access and away from noise and fumes.
Do you provide drawings for our contractor?
Yes. The design-only service includes layout drawings, room data, MEP points and the equipment list.
What equipment does an ambulance room need?
The prescribed list in your state rules, typically emergency and resuscitation equipment, oxygen, a treatment couch, dressing materials, stretchers and medicines.
Do you install and train?
Yes. We install the equipment and train your staff on its use.
Do you offer maintenance?
Yes, an annual maintenance contract can be arranged for the equipment we supply.

Services

What does a turnkey OHC include?
Needs study, compliance mapping, layout and interior design, civil and MEP fit-out, equipment supply and installation, ambulance arrangement, SOPs and handover.
What does the client need to provide?
The space or land, site access, approvals from the landlord or authority where needed, and decisions on staffing.
Can you take over a half-built OHC?
Yes. We audit what exists and complete the design, fit-out and equipment.
Who staffs the OHC after handover?
The client, directly or through an agency. We help with the staffing model, job roles and registers.
What does an OHC audit cover?
Space and layout, staffing, equipment, medicines, records, emergency readiness, first-aid coverage and biomedical waste, checked against the rules for your site.
